DVR & NVR Configuration

The recorder is the heart of your CCTV — configured for the right footage, kept the right time.

Cameras capture; the recorder decides what's kept and for how long. A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) handles analog-HD cameras over coax; an NVR (Network Video Recorder) handles IP cameras over the network. Getting the configuration right is the difference between 'we have cameras' and 'we have the footage when it matters'.

SmartNest configures new recorders and re-configures existing ones — on any brand — for the retention, alerts and secure access you actually need.

How a CCTV system connects

How a CCTV system connects — cameras record to an on-site NVR/DVR, and your router streams live and recorded footage to the cloud and your phone.

DVR vs NVR — which you have

The recorder type follows the camera type. Knowing which you have decides storage, cabling and what upgrades are possible.

DVR (Digital Video Recorder)

For analog-HD cameras (HD-TVI/AHD/CVI) over coax. Economical; typically 2MP–5MP.

NVR (Network Video Recorder)

For IP cameras over the network/PoE. Higher resolution (4MP–4K) and on-camera AI.

Hybrid / XVR

Accepts both analog and IP inputs — useful when upgrading a system in stages.

Hikvision / Prama Hikvision — The most widely deployed CCTV brand in India — broad range from 2MP budget cameras to AcuSense AI and ColorVu full-colour night models.

CP Plus — Popular Indian-market brand with strong service availability and good value for homes and small businesses.

Dahua — Global manufacturer with a deep analog-HD and IP line-up, WizSense AI, and reliable NVRs/DVRs.

What we configure

A correct setup is about retention and findability, not just 'recording on'.

  • Recording mode — continuous, motion, or schedule per camera
  • Retention — HDD sized so footage lasts the days you need (e.g. 15–30)
  • Compression (H.265/H.265+) to stretch storage without losing clarity
  • Motion zones and AI person/vehicle filtering to cut false events
  • User accounts with the right permissions (admin vs view-only)
  • Secure remote access (P2P/cloud or port-forward done safely)
  • Date/time, overwrite policy, email/app alerts and health checks
  • Backup/export workflow so you can hand clips to police if needed

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a DVR and an NVR?+

A DVR records analog-HD cameras sent over coaxial cable; an NVR records IP cameras over the network (usually PoE). NVRs support higher resolution and on-camera AI; DVRs are the economical route for 2MP analog systems. A hybrid/XVR accepts both, which helps when upgrading in stages.

How many days of CCTV footage will I keep?+

That's set by hard-disk size, number of cameras, resolution, frame rate and whether you record continuously or on motion. We size the HDD to the retention you want — commonly 15–30 days — and use H.265 compression to make storage go further.

Can you set up remote viewing without exposing my system?+

Yes. We prefer the manufacturer's secure P2P/cloud connection or a properly locked-down setup, with strong passwords and updated firmware — rather than risky open port-forwarding. You get phone access without leaving the recorder exposed.

My CCTV isn't recording / overwriting too soon — can you fix the config?+

Usually yes. Early overwrite, gaps or 'no footage' are often configuration or a failing/undersized disk. We audit the recording mode, retention, disk health and alerts and correct them — on any brand of recorder.
